The archive opens in the middle of an argument. Christian A.'s Smokers met Pete M.'s Kevorkians, the team now known as there goes the Naberhood, in the first final anyone wrote down, and Pete had every reason to expect it to go his way: the highest-scoring team in the league at 1,351 points, and two wins over the Smokers already that autumn, one of them a 58-point demolition in week seven. Christian A. had spent the season riding Tony Romo, who led the roster in scoring six separate weeks and put up 134 points across weeks ten to fourteen, and LaDainian Tomlinson, who closed the year as the carrier in four of the last five.
The final was the first of many that had to wait for Monday. Romo's 18 on Saturday put the Smokers ahead before anyone else had kicked off, and then it went away: the Kevorkians led by 2 after the one o'clock window and by 11 after four. Randy Moss, worth more across the season than anyone else in the final, had already gone for 17. Then Monday came and the Smokers had three men left standing, LaDainian Tomlinson for 17, Chris Chambers for 14 and the Chargers defense for 9, against a Kevorkians pair who managed 13 between them. Two lead changes, 99 to 82, and the most valuable man on the field went home a runner-up. It set a pattern.
